Baozi is not a relative of the philosopher Laozi, but a steamed bun with a filling and a very unusual legend. This legend is about the inventive commander Zhuge Liang. It is believed that it was the talented Chinese who invented the signal lantern, the wheelbarrow, the high-speed crossbow and baozi. Once, during another military campaign, someone jinxed Zhuge Liang. Firstly, his soldiers fell ill with the plague. And secondly, the fast current of the Lu River prevented further movement. The locals assured that only a sacrifice to the spirit of the river could save them. And the warriors who were already unwell had to be sacrificed. Zhuge Liang, of course, did not intend to kill the soldiers. Instead, he ordered the locals to slaughter the rams, prepare the minced meat, wrap it in dough so that it resembled a human head, and steam it. The residents looked at him silently, but completed the task. As expected, the strategist threw some of the buns into the river. Which made the fish very happy. And with the remaining baozi, he fed the soldiers so that they would recover faster after the plague. It is interesting that at first the buns were called mantou, which means "stuffed head". However, they fully correspond to the recipe of today's baozi, while mantou turned into buns without filling. Inside, they usually put minced pork, chicken, shrimp or crab. Plus shiitake mushrooms, carrots and green onions.
